At the start of the twentieth century, Margherita Grassini was the first female art critic in Europe, demonstrating versatility and competency. However today she is most commonly remembered because, despite coming from a Jewish family, in the 1910s she was Mussolini’s mistress. She planned his cultural policies until the racial laws were amended and she was forced to expatriate.
